VISIT FLORENCE

A personal hobby project

After moving to Florence, I quickly realized how much I enjoy discovering the city as both a local and a tourist. Friends and family constantly asked me for tips on what to visit, where to eat, and how to experience the city beyond the typical “checklist.” That inspired me to create Visit Florence: a small personal project where I designed and built a website to share everything I know about being a tourist in Firenze.

Let's start:
The "problem"
  • Most travel websites about Florence are either too generic or too cluttered.

  • It’s hard to find authentic recommendations in a clean, well-structured format.

  • I wanted a space where I could organize my own perspective as a local: something simple, visual, and easy to navigate.

The goal

Create a website that:

  • Shares useful travel tips about Florence in a structured way.

  • Feels light, fresh, and visual, avoiding information overload.

  • Can serve as a small design playground for me to test layouts, typography, and interactions in Framer.

Visual Design Principles

Process

Content first: Gathered all my notes and recommendations about Florence: neighborhoods, museums, food, tips for moving around. Grouped them into clear categories for easier navigation.

I structured the site with a simple navigation bar: What to See, Where to Eat, Tips, About. Each section is digestible and not overwhelming.

Wireframing & layout exploration: Sketched different page layouts to balance text and imagery. Focused on whitespace and readability.

Visual design: Chose a minimal and elegant style, reflecting Florence’s charm. Played with typography to bring a sense of editorial design (almost like a travel magazine). Used photos and icons sparingly to let the content breathe.

Final design decisions

Clean navigation (short, intuitive menu).
Visual hierarchy (headlines guide the eye, while paragraphs remain short and scannable).
Editorial feel (typography and layout inspired by travel guides).
Personal touch (content based on my lived experience, not generic travel info).

Learnings

Not all design work has to come from clients or job interviews; sometimes it’s about creating for the joy of it.

Designing around a subject you truly care about makes the process enjoyable and authentic.

Side projects are valuable for testing tools, experimenting with styles, and keeping creativity alive.
